What are denial and repression defences and how do I spot them?

When we are faced with a challenging emotion, it is understandably common to want to avoid it. ‘Denial’ and ‘repression’ are two instinctive mechanisms we use to avoid dealing with these difficult feelings, both of which can lead to further problems down the road. I would like to describe to you the characteristics of these mechanisms and help you to find a new, healthier way of processing painful or unwanted emotions.
When it comes to our emotions and experiences, we do the same – we defend ourselves against unpleasant or unsafe thoughts and feelings.

Defence Mechanisms: An Overview

When we feel physically threatened, we instinctively defend ourselves. Imagine a person approaching you with a knife. You body and mind would automatically enter ‘fight or flight’ mode, giving you cause to either flee the scene or fight against the armed individual.

When it comes to our emotions and experiences, we do the same – we defend ourselves against unpleasant or unsafe thoughts and feelings. These are called ‘defence mechanisms’, and in the DSM-6 (The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) 31 defence mechanisms are described.

Benægtelse

Benægtelse er, når vi blokkerer vanskelige miljømæssige begivenheder fra vores bevidsthed. Hvis en situation er for svær at bære, benægter vi dens tilstedeværelse helt. Benægtelse er et begreb, der ofte bruges i afhængigheds- og behandlingssamfund. Når en person, der er afhængig af et stof, ikke kan acceptere tilstedeværelsen af deres afhængighed og dens ødelæggende konsekvenser, benægter de problemet fuldstændigt og forsøger måske at finde noget andet at bebrejde for den ødelæggelse, der omgiver dem.

Another example is death and bereavement. When a person dies suddenly, we may find it impossible to accept, and go into deep denial about the event occurring – or how it occurred.

Benægtelse er en barriere for sandheden. At bringe sandheden til bevidstheden på en sikker og støttende måde kan hjælpe dig med at føle svære følelser og bearbejde dem ordentligt. Individuel psykoterapi kan hjælpe dig med dette.

Undertrykkelse

Repression is where we try to prevent threatening or disturbing thoughts and feelings coming to the consciousness. Unlike denial, repression is more about what’s happening inside of your mind, rather than an environmental factor.

An example of repression is guilt and shame surrounding sexuality. The repression of sexual thoughts and feelings can occur because we feel disturbed by them – for cultural, religious, familial or even legal reasons. If you have feelings towards the same gender, but are from a country where being gay is illegal, or are married to someone of the opposite gender, your natural instinct might be to repress these unwanted feelings.

  • How we feel about our families (you might repress hatred or anger towards a parent to ‘keep the peace’).
  • Vore ubelejlige ønsker for fremtiden (du kan undertrykke ønsket om at bo i udlandet eller gøre noget radikalt anderledes, af frygt for at forstyrre status quo derhjemme).
  • Hvordan vi føler om os selv (du kan undertrykke dybtliggende følelser af selvafsky, misundelse af andre eller voldelige tanker).
