After just one year, I thought couples therapy was too early

My girlfriend dragged me to couples therapy at Mark, and I really wasn’t interested. We had only been dating for a year, so I thought it was too early, because I did not think our problems were big enough to seek help. Turns out I was very wrong.

Mark helped us create an environment that wasn’t there before.

My focus moved from “there is no problem here” to “wow, I am not that great at listening to my girlfriend, or that great at talking about my own feelings.”

With Mark’s help we brought our challenges to the surface, which resulted in some tough conversations, but it helped me and my girlfriend to understand each other better and ultimately led to us having a better relationship.

During the couples therapy I felt like Mark saw patterns in my behaviour that I was not aware of.

In this time, I began to see how past relationships had failed, and why some things at work kept happening to me. Strangely, I felt that couples therapy was actually helping me have a better experience at work, and my colleagues also began to notice.

Then, Mark offered me the option to carry on working on myself in individual therapy.

Individual therapy after couples therapy

I was curious to find out more about what made me behave that way, so I started going to him individually after our needs as a couple were met.

I used to snort at psychotherapy, but now I see that therapy can help you get to know yourself and your partner much better. I specifically recommend Mark because he offers therapy in an honest way, where he is rooting for you.

Mark is very approachable and straight forward.

He gives concrete advice when I am struggling, and sometimes even shares anecdotes from his own life that are relevant to what I am going through. Instead of the distant “So, how does that make you feel”, Marks sets up a more intimate and honest conversation. Much like what happened in couple’s therapy, Mark set up a conversational space where I can be completely honest and vulnerable. Unlike at home though, I can focus my attention inwards on who I am, and why I behave the way I do, with the intention of becoming a better person.

This kind of honest and deep inquiry with another man is a scary thing to do, so having Mark there to guide me makes me less scared and more brave to do so.
